Holosun HM3X-FDE FDE 3× Red Dot Magnifier for Picatinny Rails

The Holosun HM3X-FDE is a fixed 3× magnifier designed to work behind red-dot and reflex sights. It increases the apparent size of the target and the primary optic’s aiming point without requiring the user to replace the existing sight. The magnifier has no independent reticle and does not require a battery.

The aluminium housing is finished in Flat Dark Earth (FDE), while the optical system uses multi-coated glass with 75% light transmission. A 28 mm objective, 7° field of view and 70 mm eye relief provide a practical balance between image size, viewing comfort and target observation. The 7.6 mm exit pupil is suitable for rapid use in changing field conditions.

The dioptre adjustment range of ±3 dpt allows the user to focus the image and the reticle of the primary red-dot sight according to individual eyesight. This adjustment is used to obtain a sharp image and does not replace zeroing of the main optic.

Mount and field use

The HM3X-FDE includes a quick-detach QD mount for Picatinny rails and a Flip-to-Side mechanism that moves the magnifier 90° away from the optical axis. The mount can be configured for left- or right-side deployment. This allows the user to switch between the unmagnified red-dot view and the 3× view without removing the magnifier from the rail.

The standard optical-axis height is 35.8 mm for Absolute Co-Witness mounting. The supplied spacer raises the optical axis to 41.4 mm for Lower 1/3 Co-Witness compatibility. Vertical and horizontal optical-axis adjustments help centre the primary optic’s reticle within the magnifier’s field of view. They do not change the actual zero of the red-dot sight.

The QD mount has a stated repeatability of up to ±2 MOA. The recommended QD tightening torque is 0.5 N·m. Installation should be carried out on a clean Picatinny rail, followed by checking the mount position, optic alignment and locking tension.

Protection and maintenance

The nitrogen-filled optical system is designed to reduce internal fogging. The IP67 rating provides protection against dust and temporary immersion up to 1,000 mm for 30 minutes under specified test conditions. The optic is rated for 1000 G impact resistance with less than 2 MOA deviation.

The operating temperature range is approximately −20 °C to +51 °C, while the storage range is −20 °C to +65 °C. For maintenance, clean the lenses only with an optics-safe cloth and remove dust before wiping. Keep the protective rubber cover fitted during transport and check the QD mechanism periodically.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Holosun HM3X-FDE require a battery?

No. The Holosun HM3X-FDE is a passive 3× optical magnifier, so it does not use a battery or have an electronic reticle. It is installed behind a compatible red dot sight or reflex optic and enlarges the existing aiming point and target image. This makes the system simple to maintain and ready for use whenever the primary optic is operating. The magnifier itself has no battery-life limitation, illumination control or electronic components. Battery performance depends entirely on the red dot sight installed in front of it. For practical field use, check the primary optic’s battery before a hunting trip or sport-shooting session and carry a spare battery that matches the optic’s specification.

Does the Holosun HM3X-FDE have its own reticle or MRS system?

No. The Holosun HM3X-FDE does not contain an independent reticle and does not use Holosun’s Multi-Reticle System (MRS). Its purpose is to magnify the reticle generated by the compatible red dot sight positioned in front of it. When the magnifier is engaged, the existing dot or other reticle appears approximately three times larger along with the target image. When the magnifier is moved aside using the Flip-to-Side mount, the primary optic returns to its normal unmagnified view. Reticle colour, dot size and illumination settings are therefore determined by the main optic, not by the HM3X-FDE.

Is the Holosun HM3X-FDE compatible with green-dot and red-dot sights?

Yes, provided the primary optic and the magnifier are correctly aligned at the same optical-axis height. The HM3X-FDE is colour-neutral and works with red dot, green dot and other illuminated reticle systems. Green dot optics can appear easier to distinguish in some bright outdoor environments, while red dot sights are widely used for their familiar contrast and broad compatibility. These colour differences belong to the primary red dot sight; the Holosun HM3X-FDE only enlarges the image. The included mount supports Absolute Co-Witness and Lower 1/3 Co-Witness configurations, helping users match the magnifier to the height of the reflex optic.

Is the Holosun HM3X-FDE suitable for hunting and sport shooting?

Yes. The fixed 3× magnification provides more detail for identifying and observing targets at moderate distances while retaining the speed of a red dot sight when the magnifier is moved aside. The 70 mm eye relief supports a comfortable viewing position, and the 7° field of view helps maintain situational awareness. For hunting, the magnifier can assist with observation in suitable daylight conditions, but users must always follow local regulations and ethical field practices. For sport shooting, the QD and Flip-to-Side system allows quick transitions between a wide, unmagnified view and a more detailed 3× image.

How durable is the Holosun HM3X-FDE?

The Holosun HM3X-FDE uses an aluminium housing with a Flat Dark Earth finish and a nitrogen-filled optical system. Its IP67 rating provides protection against dust and temporary immersion up to 1,000 mm for up to 30 minutes under specified test conditions. The optic is also rated for 1000 G impact resistance with a stated deviation of less than 2 MOA. These features make the magnifier suitable for outdoor use, transport and demanding sport-shooting environments. Durability does not eliminate the need for sensible maintenance: keep the lenses covered when stored, avoid abrasive cleaning materials and inspect the QD mount before each session.

What mounting system does the Holosun HM3X-FDE use?

The Holosun HM3X-FDE uses a quick-detach QD mount for Picatinny rails and a Flip-to-Side mechanism that moves the magnifier 90 degrees away from the optical axis. The system can be configured to fold to either the left or right side. The standard optical-axis height is 35.8 mm for Absolute Co-Witness, while the supplied spacer raises it to 41.4 mm for Lower 1/3 Co-Witness. Before use, confirm that the primary red dot sight and magnifier have the same height and are positioned securely. The magnifier’s windage and elevation controls centre the existing reticle in the image; they do not replace zeroing of the primary optic.

What warranty does the Holosun HM3X-FDE include in the European Union?

The supplied product specification lists a three-year warranty for the Holosun HM3X-FDE. Warranty handling should be completed through the seller or an authorized Holosun dealer in accordance with the applicable EU consumer-protection rules and the manufacturer’s warranty terms. Keep the purchase invoice, serial-number information and original packaging where possible. Warranty coverage normally depends on correct installation and normal use, while accidental damage, unauthorized modifications or misuse may be excluded. For the exact procedure, contact Holosun Croatia or the authorized EU retailer before sending the product for inspection.

How do I focus and align the Holosun HM3X-FDE?

Begin by mounting the magnifier behind the primary red dot sight at the correct Co-Witness height. Move the magnifier into the optical axis and look at a distant, high-contrast object. Rotate the dioptre ring within its ±3 dpt range until both the target image and the primary reticle appear sharp. Use the magnifier’s windage and elevation controls only to centre the reticle within the magnified field of view. The primary red dot sight remains responsible for zeroing. After adjustment, test the Flip-to-Side movement and QD lock, then confirm that the reticle returns to the same position when the magnifier is brought back into line.
